Explain the podular jail components.
What will be an ideal response?
The two key components of the podular jail are rounded or “podular” architecture for living units and a “direct,” as opposed to an indirect, form of supervision of inmates by security staff. In short, security staff are present in the living units at all times. It was thought that this architectural design would complement the staff’s ability to supervise the inmate population while negating the ability of predatory inmates to control a cell block or dormitory. Two other important facets of this type of jail are the provision of more goods and services in these units (e.g., more access to telephone privileges, visiting booths, and library facilities) and a more enriched dialogue between staff and inmates. This, in turn, enhances the staff’s knowledge of individual inmates--their personalities, issues, and challenges. Such knowledge improves both security and the day-to-day operational aspects of the jail.
