Explain the hazards of mercury contamination

What will be an ideal response?

Mercury can be absorbed through the skin if handled improperly; however, it is mainly absorbed via the inhalation of vapors. Mercury vapors can be released into the air by improperly storing scrap amalgam, by spilling mercury in the operatory, and by removing a worn or broken amalgam restoration with a high-speed handpiece without water.

Mercury poisoning can cause birth defects, brain dysfunction, kidney problems, and other associated conditions. In addition, mercury poisoning is extremely dangerous because the dental team may never be aware that an office is contaminated until serious effects have taken place.
