1. Discuss global trends in urbanization. Generally, where are people moving, both to and from, and what is driving their migration? In your discussion, offer a brief analysis of current urbanization trends, and identify and detail the social, environmental, and/or political forces that influence peoples’ migration.

What will be an ideal response?

Students should briefly summarize recent patters in migration and identify that people have been and will continue to move to cities. Students should discuss some examples of forces that drive migration, including environmental and thus agricultural degradation, economic concerns, war, etc. Students should outline the benefits afforded in cities (accessibility, jobs, etc.) and may wish to highlight the accompanying obstacles (disease, competition for resources, etc.). Students could also discuss population trends that impact migration patterns such as “youth bulges”. While answers may vary, students should demonstrate they understand the nature of cities as well as what cities afford migrants
