All other factors being equal… which is easier to design, a superscalar processor or a VLIW processor?
What will be an ideal response?
In some ways a VLIW processor is a superscalar processor with the difficult bits omitted. In a VLIW processor, the compiler schedules the instructions and creates the appropriate bundles of instructions for parallel execution. All data dependencies are checked for outside the computer.
The superscalar processor is more complicated because its front end must fetch instructions, perform reordering, register renaming, check dependencies, and then forward them to execution units.
