Define social support and discuss two ways that social support provides a buffer against stress

Social support is defined as an individual's knowledge or belief that he or she is cared for and loved, belongs to a network of communication, and has a mutual obligation with others in the network.

Social support acts as a buffer against stress when it is received at the point of appraisal of a potential threat. Social support also provides a buffer against stress when it is offered during the coping phase of a stressful situation and the person is trying to recover from the experience.
