As the scouts rode along the Platte River, they carefully avoided Cheyenne and Arapaho hunting parties that might attack them and take their horses. Eventually, the Skidi party found three buffalo standing alone by a creek. There, outside the tents, which had been carefully arranged according to constellations of stars in the sky, women deftly cut up and dried the meat, then made mats out of the intestines, robes and blankets out of the hides, and implements out of the bones.
