Drivers of commercial motor vehicles in the United States must abide by federal Hours of
Service (HOS) regulations. These regulations have been established for the protection of the
truck drivers themselves as well as other travelers. HOS rules are necessary to ensure that they
spend enough time resting so that they are protected. One provision in HOS regulations is that
anyone driving a commercial vehicle keep a log in their vehicle. In the log, drivers must record
the number of hours that he or she has spent driving, the number of the miles driven during that
time, and the time spent resting. Another option is for he or she to use an electronic on-board
recorder that registers the amount of time they have been driven. When the trucks pass through
weigh stations, the logs or recorders are sometimes checked by transportation officials. A driver
can be fined or lose their license if they violate the HOS regulations.
