b. pull the lower auricle down and out to straighten the canal.
c. insert the speculum about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch.
d. introduce air into the canal by gently squeezing the bulb attachment.
A
When inspecting the ear of a 2-year-old child with suspected otitis media, you should not ask the child where it hurts. For a 2-year-old child, an inspection of the internal ear is traumatizing and fearful. The child in all probability will be crying or screaming. Therefore, it is inappropriate to ask such a child about the location of pain. The lower auricle should be pulled down and out to straighten the ear canal for children up to 3 years of age. The speculum is inserted about 1/4 to 1/2 inch, depending on the patient's age. Suspected otitis media must be evaluated with a pneumatic bulb which introduces air into the canal.
