Explain how the FBI definition of rape has expanded over time.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer should include that originally the definition was limited to female victims and until 1975, rape could not occur between a husband and wife. In 2011, the definition was broadened to “penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with a body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.” This definition allows for male victims. In 2013, the word “forcibly” was removed to include cases where there is a lack of consent but not force, such as an unconscious victim.
