Transmissions and transaxles require clean lubricant to function properly and to be durable. The moving metal parts must not touch each other and should be continuously separated by a thin film of lubricant to prevent excessive wear. Bearings rely on lubricant for smooth and low-friction rotation of the shafts they support. Lubricant is continuously being wiped away as meshed gears rotate. This action causes friction and high heat, and without a constant supply of lubricant, the gears would rapidly wear. Gear oil, by reducing friction in the transmission, also limits the amount of power loss because of friction. Gear oil also protects the gears and related parts from rust and corrosion, keeps the parts cool, and keeps the internal parts clean.
