Describe the circumstances of the Lily Ledbetter case.
What will be an ideal response?
Lily Ledbetter retired from Goodyear Tire after working for 19 years as a night supervisor. She discovered six years before her retirement that for most of her career she had earned 20 percent less than her male counterparts. She filed a charge of unlawful employment practice. The case reached the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court threw out the case on grounds that the statute of limitations, as mandated in Title VII had run out. This triggered Congress to pass legislation dealing with the statute of limitations use. The law was signed by President Obama on January 29, 2009.
