Compare the energy needs of a 45-pound, 4-year-old child with the energy needs of his 120-pound mother. Explain why the child’s energy need is greater than that of his mother’s?

What will be an ideal response?

The child requires approximately 40 calories × 45 pounds, whereas his mother needs approximately 18 calories × 120 pounds. The child’s basal metabolic rate is significantly higher and he/she is also experiencing periods of rapid growth which translated into a high energy demand. Although the mother’s body continues to undergo some growth (cell repair and maintenance) the rate is significantly slower and, thus, she requires less energy (calories). In addition, the 4-year-old is probably more physically active than his/her mother!
