Are private prisons less expensive and more effective?

What will be an ideal response?

• The record is mixed; some studies suggest they are less expensive (at least on an inmate cost per day basis), but overall there has been no clear evidence that private prisons or public prisons were more cost effective. Several studies have examined postrelease outcomes between public and private prison inmates, with mixed reviews. Overall, there have not yet been a sufficient number of "apples to apples" comparisons of quality and cost between public and privately operated prisons to draw decisive conclusions.
