• Yin and yang--literally the female and male principles-- is the idea from Taoism that "any entity comprises not only a principal object but, at the same time, its complementary opposite. The concept of complementary opposites applies in a similar manner to the study of the present music of China along with its musical past, i.e., the "new" is a reaction to the "old."
