Roots found in "no wave" band from New York, Sonic Youth. Grunge scene developed in and around Seattle, WA. First band to gain a strong following was Soundgarden (lead singer is Chris Cornell). Influences come from blues, Led Zeppelin, Heavy Metal and Garage Rock. Popularity followed for the band Mudhoney, and then Nirvana. Nirvana was a trio, broke through to mass popularity with the album Nevermind, and the hit single "Smells Like Teen Spirit," both of which won many awards. Kurt Cobain married Courtney Love from Hole. He committed suicide in 1994. Pearl Jam (lead singer is Eddie Vedder) reached widest level of popularity of the Grunge bands.
