Discuss the various theories concerning why victims stay with their abusers.

What will be an ideal response?

The cycle of violence consists of a tension-building phase, an acute battering phase, and a honeymoon phase that keeps the abused with his/her abuser. Battered woman syndrome suggests that the constant fear of the abuser is what keeps the abused in the relationship. Stockholm syndrome suggests that a battered woman is essentially a hostage and develops a bond with the captor. Traumatic bonding theory suggests that an abused woman develops unhealthy attachments to claims of remorse and affection that follow a beating. Psychological entrapment theory suggests that a woman has invested so much into the relationship that she is willing to tolerate it rather than leave it. Multifactor ecological perspective suggests that the reason women stay in abusive relationships is based on a variety of factors.
