Classes that practice mainstreaming have teachers who are trained to assist with the special needs of students with learning disabilities and provide additional instruction and time for them to complete assignments. Students may be in the regular classroom all day or may receive instruction in a resource room for part of the school day. Students report preferring combining time in the regular classroom with time in a resource room equipped with a teach who is trained to meet their special learning needs. Mainstreaming aims to help students overcome difficulties with social awareness and skills resulting from their attention and processing deficits. Interacting with peers and working in groups helps students learn social skills and form friendships.
Inclusion keeps students in the regular classroom all day but provides them with a teacher or paraprofessional specially trained to meet their needs. With inclusion, students with learning disabilities have been found to learn more and demonstrate greater social advancement than when they are removed from the classroom for part of the day.
