Describe environmental pollution concerns associated with Portland cement and some possible solutions.
What will be an ideal response?
The manufacturing of Portland cement is a major source of environmental pollution. Per ton of clinker produced, 3 to 6 million BTU of energy and 1.7 tons of raw materials, chiefly limestone are required. Significant emissions including carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and particulates are produced. The industry is now looking at the use of both alternative fuels and supplementary cementing materials. Supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) are mineral admixtures consisting natural or by-products of other manufacturing processes that are used to reduce the amount of Portland cement in a concrete mix.
