Describe a ketogenic diet. What are the pros and cons of such a diet? How is ketosis related to diabetes mellitus?

What will be an ideal response?

A ketogenic diet is low in carbohydrate and high in protein and fat. Ketone bodies are produced as fat is
metabolized. Pros: rapid initial weight loss and caloric restriction. Cons: initial weight loss represents loss of
glycogen and water, rather than fat; dehydration, vitamin and mineral deficiency; and kidney problems. Untreated
diabetics cannot metabolize carbohydrates normally, so their diets are functionally ketogenic.
