What are some limitations of Freud’s theory, and why is it still relevant?

What will be an ideal response?

The greatest problem for Freud’s theory is that it wasn’t confirmed by empirical evidence, neither does it stem from or is it validated by science. However, Freud based his theory on observations from his clinical practice, and some of his claims have face validity. His theory is also a basis for many modern theories of sexuality, which is why it should be understood and discussed. It is also still used and accepted by many theorists and clinicians. While many generally accept Freud’s theory of developmental stages of sexuality, his outlook on Oedipal conflict in girls appears incomplete, and it is
often rejected. Also, a great portion of his theory is based on the idea that people repress memories of problems or trauma during psychosexual development, which is a claim fully unsupported by research.
* Since Freud is often mentioned in previous chapters, students can also mention his revolutionary approach in accepting infantile sexuality but also some of his more dubious claims, such as the infantile nature of clitoral orgasm.
