What will be an ideal response?

Maya Lin most likely would have achieved a successful career even if she had not won the design contest. She earned degrees from both Yale and Harvard, and won many other awards for her designs. She may not have achieved the same level of notoriety, however, had she not won the contest to design the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial.
