The NEC specifies that ground-fault protection shall be provided on certain electrical equipment. In addition, the NEC lists several other applications as follows for this type of protective device:Required

?for 1000 ampere or larger, solidly grounded wye service of more than 150 volts to ground but less than 600 volts phase to phase
?for service devices, ground-fault protection set to operate at a maximum of 1000 amperes
Recommended
?for feeder and branch-circuit protection
?for service of less than 1000 amperes where it is solidly grounded and for more than 150 volts to ground not exceeding 600 volts phase to phase
Exception
?provisions of this section of the Code shall not apply in a continuous industrial process where a nonorderly shutdown will introduce or increase hazards.
