The United States has sometimes been referred to as a "melting pot." What do sociologists call the process by which minorities become part of the melting pot? Describe the process with an example, and discuss issues or problems with it
What will be an ideal response?
Assimilation. The minority group abandons its culture to embrace the dominant culture; for example a Spanish-speaking family might no longer allow its children to speak Spanish, might no longer celebrate their cultural holidays or participate in cultural traditions. An issue is that not everyone "melts" or assimilates; the dominant group stays dominant and the minority groups are the ones that change. Another issue is that cultural traditions and language can be completely lost. In addition, some groups do not want to give up their traditions.
