What causes prison riots? How might riots be prevented?

What will be an ideal response?

• The causes of prison riots are diverse. They include (1) unmet inmate needs, (2) violent tendencies of some inmates, (3) dehumanizing conditions of imprisonment, (4) desires to regulate inmate society and redistribute power, and (5) power vacuums created by changes in prison administration, the transfer of influential inmates, or court-ordered injunctions. Recognizing the causes and acting proactively to address them may help prevent further prison riots.
