The DSM-5 authors replaced the category of autistic disorder with "autism spectrum disorder." Although it was evident that neurological differences exist between people with and without autism spectrum disorder, the basis for these differences and their implications were not clear. According to this view, the diagnosis of Asperger's disorder was removed, and individuals with these symptoms are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
