On page 279 we learn that anger management programs have been used with domestic violence offenders. Some studies suggest that this type of intervention makes a difference (unknown to what degree), but others claim it doesn't work
What might be a possible reason why anger management wouldn't work with domestic violence offenders?
Experts in domestic violence claim that the perpetrators are not displaying anger out of control, but instead using anger to gain power and control over someone. It is further believed that most of the time abusers can't get better because it is a learned behavior and cannot be unlearned. They compare it to riding a bike. You normally can't unlearn how to do that. It is believed by domestic violence professionals that the best reactive remedy for domestic violence is to hold abusers accountable for their actions. This involves law enforcement taking swift action. The best proactive prevention is to nip it in the bud before it even starts. In other words, teach young boys how to not become bullies and controllers
