Identify and explain the difference between essential fat and storage fat.

What will be an ideal response?

Responses will vary; total fat in the human body is classified into two types: essential fat and storage fat. Essential fat is needed for normal physiological function and without it, health and physical performance deteriorate. Essential fat is found within tissues such as muscles, nerves, bone marrow, intestines, heart, liver, and lungs. Your essential fat constitutes 3 percent of the total weight in men and 12 percent of the total weight in women. Storage fat is the fat stored as adipose tissue. This fat is found just beneath the skin and around the major organs in the body. Storage fat serves three basic functions: as an insulator, as an energy source, and as padding. The amount of storage fat does not differ between men and women, but the location of the storage fat tends to differ (men around the midsection and women around the thighs).
