There are three common categories for both manuals: paraphilias, sexual dysfunctions, and gender
identity disorders. Sexual dysfunctions can be caused by multiple factors, cognitive and emotional.
Paraphilias are sexual behaviors, fantasies, and urges considered culturally irregular, but to be
diagnosed, they must cause significant stress or impairment in functioning and last for at least 6 months.
Gender identity disorders can appear at all times in life and include beliefs that one’s biological anatomy
and gender roles, sexuality, and desired appearance do not correlate. The ICD-10 includes a fourth
category: disorders of sexual maturation and development, aimed at homosexuals distressed by their
sexuality.
