- The most common obstacles to communicating with members of different cultures include anxiety, ethnocentrism, and discrimination.
* Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease.
* Ethnocentrism is a learned belief that our own culture is superior to all others.
* Discrimination is the verbal or nonverbal communication behaviors that foster prejudiced attitudes including the act of excluding or denying people access to products, rights, and services based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc.
- Student examples will vary but should include reference to at least one barrier listed above, and specific efforts to overcome it.
