Some cells within a female will have a condensed paternal X chromosome and some cells within the same individual will have a condensed maternal X chromosome. Explain how this occurs
What will be an ideal response?
X chromosome inactivation does not occur within the embryo until the ˜200 cell stage. The X chromosome inactivation occurs independently in each of the 200 cells. Therefore in some of these cells the paternal X chromosome is inactivated and in others the maternal X chromosome is inactivated. Every daughter cell that arises from cell division from each cell from that point of development onwards, will have the same (maternal or paternal) X chromosome inactivated.
