Estrogen has the following functions: needed for egg maturation and release, stimulates growth of reproductive tract, thins cervical mucus, enhances transport of sperm, stimulates growth of endometrium and myometrium, triggers onset of labor by increasing uterine responsiveness to oxytocin, promotes development of secondary sexual characteristics, stimulates duct development of breasts, promotes fat deposit, increases bone density, improves blood cholesterol profile by raising HDLs and lowering LDLs, and promotes vasodilation.
Progesterone has the following functions: prepares uterine environment for developing embryo/fetus, promotes formation of thick mucus plug during pregnancy, inhibits GnRH secretion, inhibits prolactin stimulation of milk during gestation, and inhibits uterine contractions during gestation.
