Explain memory changes that occur in older people.
What will be an ideal response?
- Environmental factors are at work, such as taking prescription drugs that affect memory, or the fact that retirees need to use their memories less than when they were facing job challenges.
- Information processing deficits may lead to declines in recall abilities. The ability to screen out irrelevant information or thoughts may decrease, and the speed of information processing may decline. Older people may lose the ability to concentrate on new material and have difficulty paying attention and organizing material in memory. They may also use less efficient processes to retrieve information from memory.
- Biological factors, such as brain and body deterioration, may cause memory changes. Declines in episodic memory may be related to deterioration of the frontal lobes of the brain or a reduction in estrogen. Studies have also documented cell loss in the hippocampus, which is critical to memory.
