Describe the use of a backpressure gauge to test the exhaust system.
What will be an ideal response?
The backpressure gauge should be installed ahead of the catalytic converter. This can usually be done by removing the oxygen sensor and installing the gauge using an adapter in its place. When this cannot be done, a small hole may be drilled so the gauge may be attached. The hole must be sealed after the test. During the test, pressure should be near 0 at idle and below 1.5 psi at 2,500 rpm. The throttle should be snapped and the pressure should remain below 4 psi. Any other readings will require inspection for restriction at the exhaust components.
