What are the recommendations for maximizing calcium absorption from foods and supplements?
What will be an ideal response?
Calcium from foods or supplements should be consumed in doses of 500 milligrams or less. Kale, broccoli and greens (apart from spinach) have higher absorption rates than the calcium in dairy products. Because calcium can reduce the absorption of iron, a calcium supplement should not be taken at the same time of day as an iron supplement. Calcium supplements should be taken with a meal when HCL is produced in the stomach to increase absorption. The safest calcium supplements have the terms "purified" or USP on the label.
