Provide a brief history of the development and progress of the American Counseling Association.

o In 1952, the American Personnel and Guidance Association (APGA) was founded. It was concerned with educational and vocational guidance and related personnel issues. Four organizations became part of the APGA including the American College Personnel Association, the National Association of Guidance Supervisors and Counselor Trainers, the Student Personnel Association for Teacher Education, and the National Vocational Guidance Association.
o In 1961, APGA published first “sound code of ethics for counselors.” Following this, professionalism in the field and membership increased.
o In 1970’s, APGA became more formalized, built headquarters in Alexandria, VA, added several counseling specialty divisions, began questioning its role and professional identity.
o In 1980’s – Licensure grew rapidly, number of counseling graduate programs increased. During this decade (1981), the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) was formed to refine and standardize counselor education programs. In1983 APGA changed name to American Association for Counseling and Development (AACD) to reflect the changing demographics of its members and changing settings in which members worked.
o In 1992, AACD changed name to American Counseling Association.
