Discuss Walther’s law and its application to determine marine transgressions and regressions. What will be an ideal response?

The student should discuss the statement of Walther’s Law and provide examples of its
usefulness. One possible example is the changing character of sediments moving outward from
a coastline from sandstone to shale to carbonate. With a regression or transgression, these
lithologic units are deposited on top of each other. For example, with a transgression, carbonates
are deposited upon shales and shales are deposited upon sands. These may form a timetransgressive
lithologic unit.
