Explain why climate change deniers have such a powerful presence in the U.S. dialogue about global warming.
What will be an ideal response?
1. Climate change deniers have a vested interest – usually political or financial – in denying that climate change is real.
2. Profits are seen to be potentially threatened by regulations and fines for emissions, pollution, etc.
3. Researchers that come out with statements denying climate change are usually not really scientists at all, are not climate scientists, and/or have had their research backed by big players in the fossil fuel industry (e.g., car manufacturers, oil companies, etc.).
4. By design, well-done science leaves room for speculation, and climate change deniers exploit this in their messaging to undermine the scientific consensus – similar to the history of the tobacco industry denying a link between smoking and cancer.
