(a) Language is the vehicle for communicating our wants and needs and for learning what the environment requires of us. Children are judged by the appropriateness of their language usage in a particular context. Language interventions need to address these functional needs of the learner.
(b) It is important to evaluate language usage in a variety of contexts and to use that information to develop appropriate interventions to allow the learner to function in peer groups, school settings, community settings, and the home. It is also important to provide the opportunity to use language in meaningful contexts; providing at least some services in typical environments allows the learner to observe skilled language models and to develop more adaptive language skills.
