The five factors are summarized by the acronym OCEAN:
- Openness to experience: high scores are associated with people who have a vivid imagination and dream life, appreciate of art, and a strong desire to try anything once. Lower scores are associated with people who are down-to-earth, uncreative, conventional, uncurious, and conservative.

- Conscientiousness: high scores are associated with people who are hard-working, ambitious, energetic, scrupulous, and persevering. Lower scores are associated with people who are negligent, lazy, disorganized, late, and aimless.
