Define arson and discuss some of recent trends
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: The UCR defines arson as any willful or malicious burning or attempt to burn, with or without intent to defraud, a dwelling house, public building, motor vehicle or aircraft, personal property of another, etc. Only fires that have been determined, through investigation, to have been willfully or maliciously set are classified as arsons. Fires of suspicious or unknown origins are excluded from this category. Arson can be aggravated if the burning occurs that puts humans in danger, or simple if human life was not at risk. Statistics showing the instances of arson are higher than many people think. For example, according to the FBI, in 2013, there were 44,245 arsons reported. Nearly 46 percent of them involved structures (e.g., residential, storage, public). Mobile property was involved in 23.8 percent of arsons, and other types of property (such as crops, timber, and fences) accounted for 30.3 percent of reported arsons. The average dollar loss per arson was $14,390.
