How did the status of the Italian city-states change from the beginning to the end of the fifteenth century? What accounts for those changes?

What will be an ideal response?

The ideal answer should include:
a. When the fifteenth century began, the Italian city-states were independent political entities.
b. Florence and Venice were republics. The rest were principalities. The papacy had lost control of the Papal States during the Great Schism, and lords and cities in those regions had grown accustomed to their autonomy.
c. By century's end, the Italian peninsula was embroiled in warfare. City-states fought against one another as well as against France, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire. Most city-states eventually lost their independence.
d. France invaded Naples in 1494, starting the Italian Wars. When the wars ended in 1530, most of the major Italian cities were under Spanish control. Venice was the exception.
e. Popes used military force to reassert control over the Papal States and to defend their interests against hostile neighbors.
f. The new international landscape favored large monarchies that were able to field large armies.
