Explain how the recruitment of mine workers impacts public health

Great numbers of workers in the mines are temporary migrants from rural areas. Migrant labor has helped spread tuberculosis and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Most miners are single or married men who spend extended periods away from their wives or girl- friends, and it is common for them to contract the virus from prostitutes and then return home to their villages, where they spread it still further. The HIV infection rate among migrant miners working in South Africa was more than 25 percent in 2011—a high rate, but down from 40 percent just three years earlier.
