For Closer Look: The Bayeux Tapestry: In what ways does the tapestry reveal itself to be a work of propaganda?
What will be an ideal response?
The Bayeux Tapestry reveals itself as a work of propaganda in its history and content. The work was commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, half-brother of William, duke of Normandy, who conquered England in 1066. The tapestry narrates in both pictures and words (Latin) this conquest from the Norman point of view. The tapestry was designed to be hung around the choir of Odo’s Bayeux Cathedral, an unabashed act of self-promoting propaganda on the part of the Normans. This can also be seen in the details provided in Revel Asset: Closer Look: The Bayeux Tapestry. There one sees images of Harold of Wessex’s betrayal, the bad omen of Halley’s Comet, and the Normans slaying Harold.
