There is evidence of serotonergic abnormalities in anorexics and bulimics. Can it be concluded

that a dysfunction in the serotonin system underlies these eating disorders? Why or why not?

What will be an ideal response?

Many patients with eating disorders respond well to treatment with antidepressants that
target serotonin. People with anorexia nervosa have low levels of a major metabolite of
serotonin. People with bulimia nervosa have normal levels. After recovery, however,
both groups have higher levels than control women do and than when they are ill. These
findings suggest, but do not prove, a disruption in the serotonergic system.
