How are the gastric glands in the stomach protected from digestion by the enzyme they produce?

What will be an ideal response?

The chief cells in the gastric glands produce the inactive form of the enzyme called pepsinogen. The
pepsinogen does not become active, in the form of pepsin, until it encounters hydrochloric acid in the
stomach. At this stage, the mucus lining of the stomach protects it from enzymatic action.
