Because of changes in the structure of society (new economy affecting how we work, unequal access to good higher education opportunities, risk shift of job training from states and companies to individual people and their families), we have increasingly become a credentialist society where people need a degree to get a job. Lower Ed, according to Cottom, is “first and foremost a set of institutions organized to commodify social inequalities” (17). Consequences include high student loan debt without graduation, lack of prestige of degrees, and unknown outcomes.
