Describe what is meant by stereotypes and prejudices. Do you hold any stereotypes or prejudices? Where do you think your stereotypes or prejudices came from, and what factors may be involved in maintaining these beliefs?
What will be an ideal response?
Stereotypes are fixed beliefs about social groups. It is a way that we categorize people from various groups. For instance, we make assumptions about people based on their weight, race, apparent affluence, etc. Prejudice in a negative feeling toward a particular group. Unlike stereotypes, which are tied to specific content, prejudice is an emotional bias based on group membership-for instance, a person who doesn't like women, the elderly, or some racial group. Students will go on to reflect on their own stereotypes and prejudices and why they may have those formed those beliefs. An example might be a student who indicates that they have a stereotype of teenagers being lazy; they may have developed this belief because they worked with a group of people on a project and all the teenagers just messed around and did not help. Students will further reflect on what factors may be involved in maintaining this belief. An example might be that they have never had an experience working with teenagers where they really showed any effort to reach a goal.
