By 1877, there were no Republican governments left in the South. How do you account for that?

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: Students should look for both internal and external causes. Internal causes would be the violence that was perpetrated against the radical governments. Strong students will analyze the inability of these governments to defend themselves and may focus on the scalawags as a weak link, willing to follow White Supremacy campaigns. Students should also see the external causes of the failure of northerners to continue to support these governments. Better students will point to the racism that was endemic in the North and the serious problems within the Grant administration.
