Urinalysis revealed Ms. Stoltzfus had ketone bodies in her urine. Explain what the presence of these ketone bodies tells us about her metabolism
What will be an ideal response?
Under certain conditions, the acetyl-CoA molecules produced in hepatocytes by the ?-oxidation of fatty acids can combine to form ketone bodies. These molecules enter cells and are converted back into two molecules of acetyl-CoA and then fed into the citric acid cycle, ultimately producing ATP. During starvation or similar conditions, ketone bodies are produced faster than the cells can use them, causing ketosis. This condition indicates that she is not getting adequate nutrition.
