Summarize the causes of emotional or behavioral disorders
What will be an ideal response?
As with most disorders, there is typically no single cause. There are biological causes, primarily related to brain functioning and heredity. For example, there is less grey matter in the brains of people with schizophrenia and conduct disorder. Temperament is biologically based and refers to behavioral tendencies; for example, some children are simply more impulsive and resistant to guidance and supervision than others. Environmental considerations for emotional or behavioral disorders include school factors and family factors. Too many children with EBD in schools have no IEP, only some have behavioral intervention plans, and there are not enough teachers well-trained in how to teach these students and manage behavior. Family factors include problems related to poverty, living in a single-parent household, other family members with disabilities, and unemployment. Parents of students with EBD are less likely to volunteer at school or attend class events.
